Beginning transmission:
🛸 We recorded this piece live, off-the-floor in a studio. We wanted the composition to come together intuitively and collaboratively, with as very little post-production as possible
👽 In our own music, we already mix acoustic instruments with electronic sounds. So we imagined what the materials that will be part of Leeroy New's piece would sound like, reframing recycled materials as sources of sound
🛸 We aimed to create a deconstructed version of budots, a techno/EDM genre that originated from Davao, a city in Mindanao (the southern region of the islands now known as the Philippines). We wanted the piece to be atmospheric and upbeat, fun and irreverent
👽 We also took some inspiration from sci-fi films like Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, The 5th Element, 2001: A Space Odyssey - reimagining space travel and creating our own sci-fi language to work with the visual aspect of Leeroy's work
🛸 There are live-processed archival audio clips and field recordings that are specific to Scarborough Town Centre and it's shared history with the Filipino diaspora
released September 24, 2023
